Poor fit for horse and rider, 9/22/2009

I bought this to try on my Paso Fino, which has a similar gait and body type to an Icelandic. It came with a medium gullet, which was odd since Icelandic horses are broad-backed, in my understanding. I got an x-wide gullet with it. It took three people to get it in (so much for "easy change"). And, after our half-hour of effort, the saddle still perched ridiculously on her back. Another rider located a Wintec gullet gauge, which confirmed that the "x-wide" needed around another two inches to fit her wide back (whereas the x-wide Thorowgood Cob I ended up with is perfect). So, I was only able to sit in the saddle on my saddle rack. It wasn't wide enough in the seat to comfortably support my hips when sitting "on the pockets" for her gait, even though I'm only 5'3" and a size 4/6.
